How the Indian girls wowed us at the Olympics!

During the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, one of the top Indian Olympics officials told me that we will start getting medals when we encourage our girls to compete. He was not wrong. He cited how China and Russia had used this model along with the men and were able to bring home a sizable amount of medals for their countries.

This is not to say that our men are not a vital element as they have done India proud in boxing, shooting and wrestling. But we should not neglect 50 per cent of our country.

When I watched Dipa Karmakar do the Produnova - that can literally kill a gymnast, as the degree of difficulty is challenging and one wrong move could lead to a broken neck - my heart burst with pride. This little known bundle of energy and spunk did a perfect Produnova and then smiled happily for the audience. Though she came fourth, I bet many judges would have thought she deserved a medal just for that. When the US Gymnast Simone Biles who won gold was asked about Dipa Karmakar’s move she said I would never try it, it’s insane. Considering Karmakar trained in gyms where the apparatus was makeshift, makes her resilience and performance even more noteworthy.

Then came the bronze with Sakshi Malik in the wrestling. From almost losing she came out winning the bout – it was truly gutsy.
