Indians are buying bigger cars. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire compact sedan has been India’s biggest selling car since the start of the 2018-19 fiscal year, overtaking the carmaker’s small Alto, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Maruti Suzuki sold 182,139 Dzire cars in April-November 2018, up from 153,303 during the same period in 2017. Maruti Suzuki’s Alto sales, on the other hand, dropped from 175,996 in April-November 2017, when it was the best-selling model, to 169,343 during the same period in 2018.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift was third best-selling model with 160,897 units sold in April- November 2018, up from 115, 192 in 2017 when it was the fourth biggest seller.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the market, with all the top six most popular models made by it. Its Baleno hatchback was the fourth biggest seller in 2018 with 149,270 units sold, up from 126,098 in 2017 when it was the third most popular model. The Vitara Brezza compact SUV, also made by Maruti Suzuki. moved up to fifth from seventh spot, with 109,247 units sold, up from 100, 370 a year ago. WagonR, another Maruti Suzuki model, was sixth, with 107,061 units sold, down from 114,425 in 2017 when it was the fifth most popular.

Hyundai Motor India's premium hatchback Elite i20 was the seventh most popular model with 92,817 units sold, up from 89, 988 in 2017 when it was the eighth most popular.

Hyundai’s compact car, Grand i10, was the eighth most popular model, with 88,016 units sold, down from 103, 375 in 2017 when it was the most sixth most popular.

 Hyundai’s SUV Creta retained its ninth spot with 84071 units sold, up from 71,808 a year ago.

Maruti Suzuki’s Celerio compact was the 10th most popular with 70,079 units sold, up from 66,682 a year ago.
