The Congress won the Ramgarh Assembly seat in Rajasthan’s Alwar district today (January 31), with its candidate ShafiaZubrai beating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Sukhwant Singh by 12,228 votes. With this win, the Congress, which wrested power from the BJP in the December 2018 state assembly election in December , has secured 100 seats in the 200-member Rajasthan legislative assembly. The Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Jagpat Singh came in third.
Election to the Ramgarh seat was delayeddue to the death of sitting MLA and BSP candidate Laxman Singh. The polls were held on January 28.
This win reduces the Congress’ dependence on support from other non-BJP parties.
At present, Congress has 100 MLAs, RLD 1, BJP 73, BSP 6, RLTP 3, CPI (M) and BTP 2 each. Besides, there are 13 Independent MLAs.
